This guy was making his way to the woods via my driveway yesterday morning. He rested a few times but got there, eventually.

Looks like he'd been out slumming. How big was he and did you give him a shower?

Sure am glad those folks are in your yard and not mine.

He was about as big around as a 5 gallon bucket. And yes, I sprayed him off a little before he went on his way.
Very strange to wake up and see a snapping turtle in your driveway, I must say.
I checked this morning; nothing but the truck and Sunday paper in the driveway this morning. :(

A couple years ago Delmer called and asked me to come over and look at a turtle he'd found. It was a common snapper like this one. Not a welcome find. Hopefully, it was a released 'pet' and not part of a breeding population.

Oh. I loved Wild Kingdom when I was a kid. I still remember Jim Fowler thrashing and splashing around in a river battling a 30' anaconda while Marlin Perkins stood on the bank in freshly laundered whites hollerin' "Don't let him escape, Jim!"

Watch your fingers. A snapper that big can do some serious damage.

Oh hell, I didn't touch him. My dad used to "feel" for turtles along the banks of Will's Creek in Ohio. I know what they can do. Thankfully, he never had a bad experience doing that.

I just left the little guy alone and, after a short rest, he sauntered on his way. Last seen high-tailing it to the woods!

They are good in soup! Not sure if it is a PA Dutch thing or not but I surely remember my grandmother making one tasty batch of snapper soup from time to time ;)

I'd love to try me some turtle soup. Wonder if there are any restaurants that serve it in Denver...

I can only think of one place around here to find turtles, and that's the Denver Zoo. We don't have wild ones here.
