operationmigration.org has been working to reintroduce the whooping crane back into the wild. Check out their website for in depth information.

This morning we got up at 5:30 am (second day in a row, but they canceled yesterday) and drove down to the coast to see the fly over as they were placing 7 crane at the St. Marks Wildlife Area. When we arrived it was a balmy 25 degrees F. They flew right at us (with the sun in direct line), then over head, and then around to the wildlife area. I consider it a Bucket List item, seeing Whooping Cranes.

I remember St. Marks well. Spent a lot of time there growing up. I did a lot of scuba diving in the St. Marks and Wakulla rivers. It was really unspoiled then. Mostly dirt roads with canopied oaks and spanish moss. Lots of gators.

vmijct, did you dive the rivers for points? I have one piece of a Dutch pipe and the neck of an amphora jar from the St. Marks River. Also a number of nice points. Do you remember Old Plank Road down to the Civil War Battlefield of Natural Bridge? If you head south on the road it turns to dirt, but you can travel all the way down to Newport on the St. Marks. We live just north of Tram and Old Plank Roads. Know the area?

Cool? Jon is was frigging cold by Florida standards.
