A couple weeks ago, I ran my first 5K race. After it was done and my ability to breathe returned, I realized how much I enjoyed the experience and how I felt later that day. I'm training to run another 5K on Black Friday. Something that I've noticed is how willing other runners are to help newbies like myself. Getting a lot of support. Who else runs either for fitness and/or competition?

I started running this year after a ten-year break. I broke my ankle very badly while trail running back in 2000, and had to have three surgeries. The last surgeon told me I'd never be able to hike or run again, so I started running (after the physical therapist gave me the all-clear) just to prove him wrong. So far this year I've run two 5K races, and I'm currently training for a 10K in the Spring. I've been using a running training program on iTunes called PodRunner Intervals; it has been a great help to get back to it! As for the hiking, I've decided to join the 46ers, folks who climb all 46 high peaks in the Adirondacks. So much for dire predictions. NEVER let a doc tell you that you can't do something! :)

Cool for you - it rocks for sure. I love the completely soaked clothes - to me it's a sign i kicked a$$ - if i throw in some hills i will get winded otherwise i find myself not having that issue (most of the time, each run is different though for sure)
i want to do a 5-10K or even a half marathon - i can go for 75-90 minutes on a regular basis and have even hit 120 minutes 3 times...
i turn my MP3 player on and i just go until i feel spent ..
i don't like hills but i will throw them in to mix it up
i try to get a good run in 2 or 3 days per week, the rest of the week is walking and the gym ..actually a good combo is the gym in the AM and then later a long run
Reminds me i need new shoes :)

i i i i i wanted to add that underused letter a few more times

I can run a block before my ability to breath goes away.

I''ve been seriously considering starting a walking regime. A little fresh air won't kill me and I can then go downtown and walk with the bazillion others who walk for a cause, cure or t-shirt..

Congrats, Dew! Me, I can't run to save my life. Never liked it, even when I was on the track team. And now thanks to a drunk skiing accident, my knees just laugh when I think about running.

I only run if someone or something is chasing me.

Brant, thats the point I can't wait to achieve. I want to throw my head phones on, and get lost in the run. Right now, its ALL work. Years, actually decades of heavy lifting and being a gym rat are taking their toll on me so I'm changing my fitness goals. Since I can't play softball anymore (bad shoulders), I think running/bicycling will satisfy that "wanna be" athlete in me.

I bet I could get you to break into a trot with the ol' Scotch and a stick trick.

    Good for you!
I walk 5 miles a day, and I really miss it, when I can't do it!

MJ - get a dog and take it for walks. I bet Dale takes Ike for long walks everyday.

My hubby is an avid soccer player and has been a barefoot runner for some time. He runs marathons and 5K's a few times a month. He's starting to have some *cough* age related problems and may have to start riding his bike for exercise. After so many years of getting pounded in soccer, I think his body is rebelling.
