Quite a few OI posters do not list anything about their location. I understand privacy issues, but so many people don't even put a state or province down, or even what country he or she is in. City or county information isn't what I am asking for. Something would be nice though. It really helps to understand more about what people say here about orchid culture when one knows where a poster is generally located.

I don't think posting your location here is what Jacob was hoping for. I personally can't remember where plants are in my greenhouse, let alone where people are located from a posting like this. A general location in the header gives an idea of whether summer for you is the same months as summer for me, what your winter light might be like, what resources (shows, vendors, etc) might be available to you. It also helps in forming an answer to know if English is your first language. I understand that some people like anonymity. I just don't understand why. Are you in the witness protection program?

i put near the border when i joined, but for no particular reason - maybe i was feeling clever. Anonymity is not my issue or i would use a fake name.

the name is "hidden" because the name is "hidden" - now that's clever :)

    Escondido - SDiego County 14 miles inland + -

maybe i will change it, but let me check with my "handler" :)

Thank you abaxter and Brant. Marni and I are of the same mind on this. It would be great if more OI users could at least put something descriptive such as state or country in the "location" section of the header that appears with each post. Just click on "User CP" to make this change.

Brant, I speak Portuguese and Spanish so I didn't need to google Escondido. :poke:

Wow, Dale! Is that your cranberry farm? Fascinating.

    "Is that your cranberry farm?"

Yes, but only five of those bogs are mine; the one that's ready to load and the four to the east (top) of that one. You can actually see Jon, Curtis, and myself putting the elevator in the bog near the red-roofed implement shed. Most of the forested property to the right is mine.

Sweet-looking property, Dale. Is the area naturally boggy or do you flood with an irrigation system? Do you grow your own sphagnum moss?

It's naturally boggy, but I still have to pump water to flood and irrigate.

"Do you grow your own sphagnum moss?"

No, but it's locally abundant in some of the vernal ponds and peat bogs. I've harvested it a few times, but it's a PITA. I don't like to disturb the peat bogs because there are darlingtonia and drosera in them.

Yeah, thanks for the info Dale! I love bogs, the ones in the higher mountains of my area are some of the most beautiful places I've been. I tasted a couple of wild cranberries from one last summer, they were great with the blueberries from the drier areas nearby.

Southern California is my locale, 1.5 miles from the ocean, so a very mild climate.
    Them bogs are beautiful, Dale.
