This is more like for fun, so I don't know where it should be in the forums.
But I feel everyone has wanted an orchid that was either too expensive or just not easy to find.
    Which one? A top 3?
I'm interested in Phalaenopsis Gigantea (I read it is around 500)
    Dimorphorchis Lowii (Around 100)
Any of those fancy Cattleya hybrids with huge flowers lol (200 and up is what I usually find online)

What is in your expensive wish list?

There's some Phalaenopsis hybrids I've almost spent too much money on.

Would really like an awarded Phal violacea v indigo. They're special needs plants and really nice ones are expensive.

Also a yellow Cattleya cernua. I regret not getting one last they were available.

I spent less than $50 on my Phal gigantea. You can get an affordable one and invest a handful of years into it!

My friend: insituorchids on eBay will have some Dimorphorchis available soon.

    1. Phragmipedium kovachii- I used to see them for sale, (they were very expensive) but I haven't seen them available for a while...:(

    2. Bulbophyllum binnendijkii/virescens- Never seen binnendijkii for sale and virescens is always in the $80+ range on ebay. Also, they always are for sale from SE Asia which makes buying them seem risky...

    3. Dendrobium aurantiflammeum- Never seen it for sale.

    Rico,
Peruflora sells Phragmipedium kovachii for reasonable prices (around $50 for a large seedling, supply is now driving the price down) and they will ship within the United States when they come for shows. Also, I know Marni has had some Dendrobium aurantiflammeum recently, you may want to inquire with her.

Thanks William! I had heard of Peruflora in the past, but could never find them online. I will look into it!

Rico, they have a forum, but they don't have a formal webpage. Basically, if you email [email protected], they will send you the price list. The next deadline is Sept 1 for the US, so you might want to hurry up! Bill, in the price list, the cheapest P. kovachii is $80, and $50 is for the flask (I killed those last year or so). I vaguely remember D. aurantiflammeum was listed in either Ooi Leng Sun or Far East Agriculture earlier this year.

Wolf, Louisiana Orchid Connection may still have reasonably priced P. giganteum and Dimorphorhis (I forgot if it was D. lowii or D. rossi).

Naoki, does peruflora only send plants to shows or do they mail plants too?

Rico, sorry, I forgot to answer. As with many other international vendors, they bring the plants for the show and ship them domestically as Bill mentioned above. In this way, you don't have to pay for the importation paper works etc., and they will charge you only for the domestic shipping. Some other vendors charge a little bit of handling/documentation charge (like $2 per plant etc). Most of those vendors can directly ship from their country, but you have to go through the full import process (and you need import permit from APHIS), and it will be quite expensive. So it doesn't make sense unless you are placing a huge order. So it is better to wait for the vendor to come to the US and place the pre-order. You should set the expectation a bit lower, and you probably have a bit higher drop rate than domestic purchase. As implied by Daniel's (DPfarr) comment, plants from some vendors can be a challenge to acclimate. To be fair, I got some amazingly high quality plants (e.g. Paphs) from Ooi, but I did kill quite a lot of their plants, too...

For me it isn't a specific species that is to pricey or rare. Rather, it is the need for an additional greenhouse where I could grow cool-cold growing species. I would love to be able to grow the majority of Dracula, Masdevallia, Lepanthes and other cloud forest species. So, greenhouse #2 and the coolers, foggers to make it work in my conditions.

I do feel fortunate to be able to grow lots of intermediate to warm-growers so I can't complain too much
