Zach, I am hoping I'll have time to also do the orchid shopping when I am down there for fishing this May. Not 100% sure yet. It just never seems economical if you go there just for orchid shopping when you have to travel that far.
Are you going to Redland again this year?

I can't say that I have a favorite or recommendation but I do enjoy the browsing. They bring interesting stuff.

Zach, I go to FL every other year for fishing/visiting friends but not always in May. I am hoping I can make it this time. I doubt I will be there for the opening day, so you have fun but save something nice for me to pick on.:p

Have you checked out this years vendor's list? I'm still trying to figure out if I can get there and what I would have to spend after POE. I haven't been for quite a few years, but I highly recommend it.

Hi Marni. I did check on that list... I agree Redland Orchid festival is a great event for orchid shopping but the displays suck IMO.
I just want to have some idea of who is selling what this year, especially the unusual stuff. I probably don't have much time for the "show" this time either(if I do go to the show), so I might just check on the foreign vendors, especially those far east vendors. also the Brazilian growers.

I created PEO thread last months to get an idea of what they have brought in so far, PEO and Redland show do have some of the same foreign vendors...but I don't have much of feedback on that PEO thread...

Despite the challenges of rehabilitating plants, I have wanted to browse Miranda's (Boa Vista) Laelinae.

What I'd really love to see is a reputable vendor of oxyglossums. Of course that isn't the wisest decision to ship oxys' overseas and then expect everyone to grow them well to begin with. A whole other issue in the end.

I don't expect to pick up any cool/cold growing Dendrobium species at Redland show. The event is held in a park and the mid May weather in southern Florida is already stingy hot. Many Vendors would hesitate to bring the cool growers for this show but some may still bring few of them.
I am hoping I will find few good/odd miniature species from Asia, especially that Ceratostylis eria. Perhaps some neat species from the new world as well.

That made me laugh, Tom. It's not economical for orchids, but it is for fishing? Do you catch enough to stock your freezer for the year?

Just pulling your leg. Any time you can "gang" excuses , it's good. (I head to SW VA every labor Day for a long weekend of smallmouth fly fishing. Economical? No. But it is great fun. (PA trout season opens next weekend in these southeast counties!!!)

I was hoping to get to Redlands this spring, but my nephew has this foolish idea that his wedding takes precedence.

The fishing is just one of fun things we plan to do when we are visiting friends and family down there. It is a totally different thing, more like a tradition and I value that differently, and you can't put a dollar sign on visiting family/friends. In the other hand, orchid is just a hobby for me..., I don't even go to SEPOS show every year while I am only two hours away.

I just ignored the display. This isn't a "show" in that sense, it is a shopping opportunity. I went with a couple of friends and we had a great time. And it was fun to meet people I've only corresponded with.

I don't have a list of the plants I bought at POE and don't really remember most of what I bought. When it blooms I'll post it.

I like to check out the vendors from Brazil and Venezuela since they don't often get to the west coast. Far East Agriculture is one of my favorites. I always get things from Orquideas del Valle when they are at POE and Peruflora has really good things. Orquifollajes are from Colombia and I've gotten really nice plants from them several times in the past. The Thai vendor who got most of my money in San Francisco isn't on the list for Redlands.

How are Ecuageneras table normally stock-wise? They will be vending at a local orchid show in a few months but based on how some plants arrived last time, I am afraid to place a large order beforehand to pickup at the show.

So hoping I will be able to find some healthy mini-micro minis just laying around their table...unless they normally bring larger species?

Mike, I have very limited experience at orchid shows but here a few observations.
Ecuagenera had a wide variety of plants and sizes but I don't recall any micro-minis. I did buy a Megaclinium manabinum from them and it is about 1 inch tall. One inch may be "big" by your standards. I bought some mico-minis (Porpax lanii and Bulbo. moniliforme) from an Asian vendor that I never knew the name of. I tried talking to that seller but he didn't speak very good English. Orquides del Valle had lots of nice minis like Lepanthes but I don't know about micros.
I pre-ordered some plants (only 2) from Ecuagenera and was happy with the quality.

Hopefully some with far more experience will speak up.

Have you seen the vendors list? Which show is it?

Thanks for the reply Kelly. This is the show: http://www.longislandorchidsociety.org/orchid_festival.html.

Doesnt look too big but its only about 20 minutes away so I have nothing to lose with the drive if I dont find anything. Looks like Ecua and J&L are my only hopes for small plants. My last order had some nice small ones...its funny some of the mounts probably had close to 75 leaves and others were lucky to have 1-2 living leaves left on the mount so its very variable it seems in terms of plant quality by the time they arrive at your doorstep.

I have never really had problems with stuff from Ecuagenera, the one time I did, they replaced the plants in question.

I dont want my post to get interpreted for not being happy with the quality...the plants that died I got a refund on and the healthy plants look great. I just think in the future Id rather see the plants in front of me and pick out the healthiest looking ones as opposed to blind ordering and not seeing exactly what I am getting.

If you are picking them up at a show, you might ask if you can inspect them and not accept those that you don't think you can make live. I have found they are good about giving a refund or credit for things I wasn't happy with. Certainly if you see a better looking plant in the sales booth than the one in your order you can exchange them.
