so my vanilla opened this morning, and this time I wanted to try to self pollinate a flower, any one ever do it? Yesterday I practiced on a Phal and a cochleanthes, it was simple, I felt confident, I was vanilla ready. I saw the flower was opening at 7a.m. but waited till 8:30, got my toothpick, turned on another light, steady as she goes. I tore the lip a little but that was ok as the flower would be done by dusk anyway. I was shaking a little as the anther cap did not come off easily, ok, got the cap, see the pollen, pollen on pick, just got to get it on the........DAG NAB IT!!!!! I pulled off the entire lip and column!!! I've got 1 more bud to try again in a day or two. Any advice?

Or, you might try cutting the lip away with a sterile razor blade.

Dale, I don't cook so I don't need extract, it's just for fun. I have a friend who is a hybridizer, the seed pods come in so many different sizes and shapes, many are quite beautiful. I've seen many seed pods but never one one a vanilla. Marni, thats a good idea, I'll try that on the next one.(I'll bet you had a good laugh at my fumble)

No, I've done the same myself more than once. I've also dropped the pollen and been unable to locate it on the floor or table (many times) and broken off the column with too much pressure trying to get the pollen in (usually on miniatures). There are many ways to go wrong on this. Though I do frequently laugh at myself in this process, it is more productive than getting angry.

As I understand it, the folks hired at next-to-nothing wages who do this sort of thing in Mexico and other tropical areas have a particular technique for pollination...they use something like a popsicle stick and gently open up the hinged anther cap...it will remain on the column if you don't yank too hard. They then hold the column with their finger and with the popsicle stick with their thumb, they press the anther cap from the outside and 'squish' it down into the stigmatic surface. This prevents loss of anthers, which could easily get lost in the dirt beneath the vines in the vanilla farm.

good luck with your second pollination

Had some succes with mine this year and read several techniques on the internet. My pompona had 50-70 blooms on it. Try not to pollinate too late in the day. I used a flat plastic tooth pick. I first wet the end with a little saliva. I would manually revove the pollen ball(if it was still there) or scoop pollen out with the tip of the tooth pick after you removed the portion containing the pollen. Take the pollen andthe small amount of salive on teh end of the tooth pick, mix it together on the toothpick and pack in on the toothpick in the form of a paste. Then take this paste and wipe it under the protective flap covering the hole to the ovaries. This was a combination of techniques that I started later in the blooming season that gave me a much higher success rate. Good luck and try to remember this is for fun. It got frustrating sometimes figuring this out.
