    the planifolia bloomed!
i was able to remove the pollen and then promptly dropped it!
after searching for ten minutes, i have decided that i'm happy there will be more flowers tomorrow (or the next day)

Great flower. But what do you think about Vanilla pompona? I think the flower ist too big for Vanilla planifolia.

i have no idea and i'm not very good at keying plants out
i'm hoping someone will be able to definitely say what it is.
that said, are you pretty sure it's pompona?

No, i'm not sure, it's only an idea. But i'm sure that your plant is not Vanilla planifolia. Let's see what the other user say.

Flower size isn't a very good judge of speciation. I've had a plant give me 5" flowers one year, and 3" flowers the next. I don't know what your plant is, Brian. It's pretty damned nice, though.

i read that the seedpod will look different on a planifolia than on a pompona so i'm hoping to {not drop the pollen and actually} pollinate the next flower so maybe in a few months i'll know!

It might be in the other thread, but are you going to get the capsule sown?

i wasn't going to pursue that because they go so readily from cuttings (and i've heard that is also likely their/its strategy in the wild)

If you drop the pollen ball(which I have done many times), you can scoop some of the pollen that's left out with a tooth pick. Wet the tooth pick with a little saliva first so it sticks to the tooth pick better. I have greatly increased my pollination success rate this way. Also try not to pollinate too late in the day. I'll post my pics but I still haven't figured out how to shrink them.
