Vanda coerulea

    A pretty blue Vanda species and this is the third year it has bloomed for me. One of my favorites.

    I'm assuming so. This is the third year its bloomed and the plant is only ten inches tall.

    Do you have a photo of the whole plant? How small was it when it first bloomed? Have a double seedling from OHG, a special from last year. Good roots.

    Ummm...that is a photo of the whole plant...the flowers got in the way...the mass of flowers is as large as the plant. I believe this plant was about six inches tall when it first bloomed. I don't know if that is precocious for this species. My plant came from Hoosier Orchids before they closed, so its possible that your OHG plant is from the same grex since they are selling some of Hoosier's stock.

    Most culture guides tell us that the species is a cool-to-cold grower - hardly typical of Nashville, I'd bet. Can you share some of your cultural parameters or how they might differ (if at all) from that given to your other vandaceous plants?

    Well, actually, I do grow it with all my other Vandas. That being said, I try not to let my greenhouse get above 90F, and during the winter the nights stay around 60 to 65F. Despite the culture guide recommendations, my plant seems very happy and thriving well in intermediate to warm conditions and blooms more than once a year.

    This is one Vanda species which prefers cool climate. In NE parts of India, they normally do very well in higher altitudes. I have been growing this in Bangalore and is doing ok though the quality of flowers may not ne anywhere nearer to its native habitat conditions. Sharing pictures with you all. Vanda coerulea-1.jpg
