Has anyone use straight charcoal as potting media or mount?

Charcoal has historically be touted as a potting medium ingredient that "sweetens" it up, suggesting that it absorbs plant wastes and decomposition byproducts. Years ago, I experimented with it as a single-ingredient medium, and found that it actually absorbs all that and dissolved solids in the water faster than bark did, making it potentially toxic sooner.

Would clay cat litter do the same? Do you think?
