The furry family

    Here are photos of all my furry family. (no Steve and Ben aren't furry)

    Question....the first two are larger files than the second two photos. I see a distinct difference in quality. How do I compress the files without losing the quality? When I take them they are as large as the camera will pernit and I usually shrink them for posting...and lose the sharpness and quality.

    I wish I could help you with your photo question but...you know. LOL!

    The first two photos are superb and so sharp! I see what you mean. The dog needs sunglasses though. He'll get wrinkles around his eyes, squinting like that!

    Nah she's just big boned. ;) She's a plump girl.

    Any advice on the photos Dale....you know how to take awesome photos.

    Are you shooting them as jpegs? What program do you use and what do you do to reduce them?

    Wendy, I reduced the two larger files so that the maximum largest dimension is 800 ppi and then sharpened them. I looked at the smaller images and it looks like there is what is called "noise" something over-done in processing. I couldn't sharpen them without making them look much worse. I also reduced one of the larger one so they are the same size as your smaller originals, see what you think.

    cute critter pics, but why the leashed cats? those big boned kitties can still jump a fence ? or are there too many dogs in the hood or ?

    Thanks all. The cats are leashed as we live in the city...one of my pet peeves is owners who let their cats loose to cause damage etc. We have a spot at the side of our own house where our stupid neighbours catt has dug up a patch of our lawn for his litter box. As Dale says...that gives me 'red-ass'. Plus our cats are safe from cars if they are in their own yard.

    Marni, I think the photos you made smaller look way better than the ones I resize. I wrote down the properties of the original photo of Gregory (which I have kept at original size as well) and they are....

    1.49MB (3072 x 2304)
    horizontal resolution 72dpi
    vertical resolution 72dpi
    bit depth 24
    Compression
    resolution unit 2
    colour representation sRBG
    compressed bits/pixel 2

    As a comparison the photo of Murray that I made much smaller is

    172KB (640 x 480)
    horizontal resolution 72dpi
    vertical resolution "
    bit depth 24
    compression
    resolution unit 2
    colour representation sRGB
    compressed bits/pixel 0

    What should I be changing? I know nothing about sizing photos so they look as nice as your's, Dale's and others...but I would like to work on that if possible. Thanks!

    Wendy, what program do you use to process these? and how do you resize the image?

    Something is happening during the resizing or saving of the resized image. When you save the smaller file, is there a dialog box that asks you what quality or percentage you want (something like, small, medium, large) on the jpeg? If there is any place where it asks you if you want it compressed? You want to say no to that. Does it ask you if you want it sharpened?

    I use the program that came with the camera. (Fuji FinePix S700) It's not a DSL but it is the next step down from what I know. To resize it gives me the choices of...

    __ 1280 x 960
    __ 640 x 480
    __ specify resolution
    __ specify ratio

    That's all it gives me. I just tried using the 'specify ratio' box but I'm not sure how the photo looks. I'll post it in the orchid species thread. I think I need a better photo program...any good ones that you can suggest?

    Yes, a better photo program would solve a lot of your problems. The camera is taking a good picture (even considering that you have super appealing subjects). I have always used Photoshop which is much more than you need. I think others on the list could give you suggestions. I'm sure there is something available at low or no cost that would give you some flexibility. If no one posts here, you could try asking the question in a separate thread. I'm interested to see what happened with the "specify ration" box.
