A very red form of alternans that finally decided to bloom after 2 years. I decided to mount it and subject it to much brighter light. The punishment seems to have paid off.

Nice! I've had similar experiences. I have a plant that has been growing but not flowering for a couple years and then I move it up to the light and it starts flowering. I just did that with the Masdevallia andreettaeana I had sitting near the bottom of my orchidarium and it's started to send up spikes.

Nice Scaphosepalum rapax in the background! :)

Thanks Alfonso. I have this problem sometimes with newly imported species. They tend to burn a few leaves under the lights so I move them down to wear they are more comfortable. Unfortunately they are not at proper levels to bloom so I have to slowly move them up and down until they are happy enough to send spikes.

I have an extra rapax and ovulare if you are ever interested in trading some species.

Hi Chad, that would be cool to trade! I have S. rapax and S. ovulare already but I'm sure you've got some great stuff that I don't have. I just saw photos of your spectacular Lepanthes telipogoniflora!! I'm going to be at Ecuagenera in August and I think I might have to pick one up for myself.:relaxed:

I've got a Masdevallia leonii, M. hartmanii, Pleurothallis fantastica, P. mystax, and P. carnosilabia that need to be remounted and are large enough to divide. My M. rubeola is large enough to divide too, but it's got a capsule on it and I don't want to disturb the plant just yet. If you like paphs I've also got a spare P. volonteanum in bloom that I could part with. I also have a pretty clone of Pleurothallis hemirhoda that I just divided.

Thanks for your comment on the telipogoniflora. The plant has gone through many stages of growth and currently it is bulking back up again but it hasn't bloomed since last summer. It really does not like the colder temps in the winter. My opinion is that the plant must be around 68F throughout a good portion of the day to set spike. My temps in the winter seldom get above 64F.

Are you going to Gauyaquil? You may find it is not so easy to bring stuff back. I think it is easier to have them bring it here. Maybe for the Sept. show in Chicago (suburbs) if you will be there.

I would certainly be interested in a few of the ones you mentioned. Especially the hookerae var. volonteanum.;) Mine are just seedlings. The only orchids I grow aside from miniatures are Paphs and a few Phrags.

I will send you a message with some plants I have available.

Cool! I've got an air conditioner that doubles as a heater. I use it to raise and lower the temps in my grow room during the winter. I'm able to keep the room between 72 and 75 F throughout the year.

I won't be in Guayaquil. I'm flying in to Quito to visit a friend and then I'll head down to Gualaceo with a lab mate to spend two weeks at Ecuagenera. We're also going on a field trip to Maldonado, which should be a lot of fun! I was down there in December and I had them ship my plants in the spring from a show in San Francisco. I'll see if it's not too late by August to have them ship my plants for pick up at the Chicago show. It's definitely better to pick the plants up at the show because in my experience they get really dehydrated after they're shipped from a show.

Let me know what you've got available! I've also got a spare M. aphanes in spike. It can handle warmer temps and it's about 1" tall.

The aphanes looks nice. I have to stay on the miniature-micro side b/c I have begun to run out of space until I part with some of my larger plants.

That is very cool that you get to make multiple trips to Ecuador. What is the lab work about? Flasking I hope. Maybe when you're down there you can round up all those missing species that I keep on ordering without success.

If you have time to take pics I think I can speak for the group and say we would love to them.

Yeah! I love Ecuador. I went out in December to meet with the author of a Masdevallia book I helped edit. It should become available in the next month or so on Amazon! I'm going out in August to help one of my lab mates do research on the lip movement of Porroglossum flowers. It's also another excuse to buy more plants from Ecuagenera. I'll take pictures while I'm down there!
