My inquiry is a bit simple.

The 'drain holes' punched into the containers in Semi Hydroponics; Are they just to drain away overfill water or do/should they provide air circulation?

Being an opening, they will of course, provide some air flow, but it is minor when compared to the volume of air that circulates between the medium particles, from the top surface. Those holes are present to define the maximum volume of the reservoir.

Fortunately, the "top down" air is sufficient. If you add more holes, that accelerates the evaporation rate, which defeats the wicking action of the medium.
