saw a video about getting seed [raw seed] directly from a old orchid plant cane / stem what ever its called..is this with all old canes please ? it looked a pro lab with hi tech equipment and seriously clean envirioment. taken then put in flasks...

am i assuming seeds can be from the plant stem itself please ???

I don't know what you saw but, no, seeds only come from a pollinated flower that makes a seed capsule. Perhaps you saw a video about tissue culture which uses meristem cells from a growing point, not seed, to make identical plants (clones) in a lab environment.

What you are seeing is the pollinated flowers fruit. What resembles a stem is the seed pod.

Robby, the video shows the sowing of seed from a seed capsule or seed pod. It does look a bit like a stem but it is a capsule. The capsule shape and size varies by species.
    Thanks for posting the video.

Edit...sorry. Daniel and I were typing at the same time.

Technically, orchids do not produce "pods" they produce capsules. Pod is loosely used in this case. If you google orchid capsule you will get a lot of results. You might also check out the information here. There is a lot of information at the bottom of that page. And excellent book on the subject is here. There is also a listserv group here.

Thank you for the info Marni, I didn't know about the listserv. Hicks book contains lots of details, but it might be a bit too steep at first. If you want to start with a simpler book, you might want to check Seaton and Ramsay. You'll eventually want Hicks if you continue to do this, though.
