It's illegal to use catchment systems in Colorado.

 

Yep, I remember my brother saying that (he lives in Boulder and I also have one in Westminster). Not sure what the logic is though.

 

The well is rated at 30 gallons a minute. I suspect I can easily pump 10 gallons a minute from a 3/4" pipe. I'm very lucky since many people in my area only have 1 gallon a minute rated wells.

 

All water flows out of Colorado; no water flows into the state (except for a few inconsequential streams). Every drop of precipitation that lands here is already owned by people downstream. Generally farmers and other municipalities. So, catching rain is in essence stealing from people downriver.

Mayhap you can catch unlimitted amounts of snow? Colorado sounds like a very silly place.

Jon, don't know if I'm stepping on your toes again, but the web page says you can get a permit to collect rainwater in Colorado.

Permits are issued in very specific circumstances. I would estimate that 99% of people living in Colorado would not qualify for a permit. But, as you said, permits are available to certain residents.

OK. You'd have to pump 55 GPM from your well for 12 hours to wind up with 40,000 gallons.

 

I heard/read somewhere that this year the Colorado rain collection policy had changed.

Edit: just saw that it applies for anyone with a well permit.

 

The Colorado legislature passed HB 09-1129 that allowed for two things: a pilot project allowing for 10 test areas to be able to collect water from non-permeable surfaces, and to afford people the opportunity to get permits given specific conditions. It was signed into law in early June.
