I received this in trade as a one-leaf division. As mentioned on this forum in other posts, it is a very slow grower. It is growing in a 2.25 inch terracotta pot with sphagnum moss. Grown shady, moist, and intermediate - warm temperatures. This is the first flower on this division.

I am surprised that someone would feel confident enough to trade a "one-leaf division". I am glad it made it. Good job.

There are many Restrepias that can be started from leaf cuttings (I have not tried this myself yet, & have heard that not all Restrepia can be propagated this way). I have a Restrepia brachypus that was started this way by a friend. What started a couple years ago as one rooted leaf is now about 15 leaves. It recently produced 4 blooms.

Being a newbie here, what are the rules on posting links to other clubs and forums? I have a couple links I could share on how to grow Retrepias from leaf cuttings.

Catt Mandu, our primary restrictions are commercial promotion unless you are a sponsor (although as a hobbyist you can offer items for sale or trade and also wanted for purchase or trade). Also, we are strict about the copyright laws. So, posting someones photo is not acceptable but posting a link is fine. If you post the information on rooting Restrepia please start a new thread in the "Culture" category so it can be "stand alone" and can be found with a search.

As for Restrepia propagation .... yes, leaf cuttings, keikis and divisions are common and easy with most Restrepia, and most species in this genus grow very fast. However, R. chocoensis has a reputation for growing one leaf per year on a small plant, two if you are lucky. Personally, I wouldn't risk a leaf off my small plant to attempt a leaf cutting. I would be interested in hearing if anyone has successfully done so with this species.

    I don't think R chocoensis starts from a cutting.

Well Kelly, it may be a slow grower, but yours looks like it was worth the wait!
