Pronunciations

    According to Hubert Mayr, it should be pronounced as see-lo-GUY-nee You might be right, but If you were wrong, you should try to blame it on the ancient Greeks for not writing down the pronunciation. Nobody knows for sure how the ancient Greeks or Romans pronounced their languages. Or do it like what I would do, just say I am so sucked at it.

    I think we can clear things up entirely by combining early, classical Latin and very early taxonomy: it's pronounce (like all orchids) "Ep-ee-DEN-drum".

    Definitely ! However, Greek is still spoken (Classical Greek can still be [more or less] understood by modern speakers), and "gyne" pronounced gee-nee (with a soft g ,like in "yikes") means woman.
    Which only confuses matters even more!:)
