Epigeneium lyonii syn E. treacherianum. Mine is just starting to open. I would be interested in trading pollen with someone for an outcross.

How the hell do you get it to bloom? I've had my plant since 5.26.88 and it hasn't shown the slightest inclination to bloom. I'm starting to get cranky about it.

Yours must be a huge plant by now. In my relatively brief experience this plant has bloomed about every-other year. It bloomed extremely well last year and then I took a division. Now, the division is blooming and the mother plant is just sitting there. I don't have any answers. I treat mine like a bright-growing Dendrobium with intermediate conditions, year-round water. The blooming division is mounted on cork and the mother plant is in a large net pot with very little medium (I think there are a few large chunks of charcoal in there).
Perhaps someone else out there can shed some more light on how to bloom this tricky species.

I have been told that it takes a brief cooler period in the winter, but it hasn't worked for me yet. I do have them on a heating mat now, so maybe that will get them to grow better and have a better chance of blooming.

Thanks, Kelly. That's about how I'm growing mine.

I'm still looking for pollen to trade. I have at least 3 spikes forming now and would really like to do an outcross with this. If you start to get spikes and want to trade pollen please get with me.
For those that have had difficulty blooming this species here is one thing that I've seen with mine. It likes to be divided. Last June I made a 3-bulb division. That division put out another growth and now that 4 bulb plant has 3 spikes. The mother plant has none, at least so far. I had the same experience last year with a previous year's division.
