Walter Teague collected this in Ecuador. It is a charming thing that is very slow growing but is frequently in bloom. The plant is about 5" tall.

Pretty! Do you have multiple clones of this? The photo (of your plant) in Ron Parsons' Compendium looks much darker petals than this. I like this lighter one with crispy patterns on the petal. Is the red-nose version rarer?

I do have multiple clones. The first place I saw this was in the collection of Walter Teague who had collected it in Ecuador years before. He was always very generous with me when I asked for divisions, but this was one he was afraid to divide. After a number of years, he has so many friends here who wanted a piece that he made a special effort to collect a number of clones so he could share it. He gave people a plant each and he gave me an number of smaller pieces of various clones. This particular one went to a friend who gave it to me when he closed his collection. I have this in flask, but find it difficult to grow well. I'm still working on it. There is some variety in the color, though I can't say if one if more prevalent than another.

Thank you for a nice story, Marni. I hope your flasking of this species will go well!

We're really lucky that you reproduce rare plants from seed!! Is your flasking website still working? Or are you only selling on ebay?

I do sell flasks on the website. The link below this post should take you there. I am always a bit behind on updating it, but it is working. I stopped selling plants through the website when it became burdensome. I sell plants through ebay and list most weeks, but not all.

Hi... I was going to post my plant and I ran across Marnie's post from August 2014 and I thought it would be better to add to Marnie's story.

John Leathers was another close friend of Walter's and Walter gave John one of the wild collected divisions and it had a seed pod on the plant. John flasked the seed and got many seedlings and I was lucky enough to get one of the seedlings. This plant is now about 20 years old and is still VERY small and slow growing!
DSC_1592.JPG DSC_1601.JPG So, there's more plants of this species for Marnie to collect pollen from and continue the great work she does of preserving our rare plants!

    Height of plant is 60mm
    Flower is 25mm

Great photos Dexter--thanks for attaching this new post to the older thread. Nice to follow the history of this species.

I had several plants from Walter's collection and used them to make an outcross. They have now started to bloom and I have another batch in flask. But they do grow slowly. My seedlings are all still rather short, probably 2" or so, but a couple of the original plants are about 5" tall.
