Phaius pulchellus var. pulchellus

    First time I've bloomed this. It is from Madagascar. The flower is about 2.5" wide. The picture I saw of this had the flower with a nice clear color, this seems to have quite a bit of marking. I tested it for virus, but nothing showed up.

    I find this species to be a very shy bloomer compared to others of this complex that I grow. I don't understand what makes it bloom or not.

    I got my Phaius pulchellus as a direct import from Madagascar. It took many months until the plant showed a sign of survival ... now at least the leayes get bigger from year to year. I guess Phaius pulchellus may like a rest period like Gastrorchis, but there are no reports about that.
