I drove into the highlands of Puerto Rico for the chance to photograph this orchid. It is a cool grower which normally would not survive the sweltering summers of the island. But the place where it is growing is among the coldest in the island. Papipenducu0.jpg

    ?
Must have been a long drive since they are native to SE Asia :D. Have these naturalized in PR? I have never seen one of these flowers other than in photos. They look amazing.

This plant is not naturalized. It was imported by the person who grows it. This is the only clump of this plant in the island of PR that I am aware of. The place where this garden is located is among the coolest spots in the island. However the road to the place is not very good. As I tell my friends, "the British drive to the right, puertoricans drive in what is left".

The plant if five feet tall. WIthout flowers it cannot be told apart from Pap. teres. It is growing along a hedge with dozens of plants other Papilionanthe hybrids and it looks unremarkable without flowers.
