The state flower of Minnesota (odd to think that of all the states, Minnesota is the only one to have an orchid as the state flower), Cypripedium reginae. Photographed in June at Lake Itasca, MN, the source of the Mississippi River. Both the plants and the flowers were extraordinarily large; the plants were about 3 feet tall.

    Flower closeup.

That is stunning! And really -- Minnesota is the only state with an orchid for the state flower? That is quite surprising. Well done Minnesota. :D
