Originally acquired this plant as Maxillaria rolfei and when we got the CCM on it, it was changed to Ornithidium miniata. Now I see in Tom Mirenda's article in this month's Orchid Magazine that it is back to Maxillaria...note to self, always keep your old tags! Incidentally the full page photo in Orchids is our plant...was really surprised and excited to see it in print.

The flowers look quite similar to Maxillaria coccinea, even though the plant form is totally different. Very interesting.

Thank you. I grow it cool and bright. In recent years, I use it as a shade plant above the Pleurothallids

Once, I actually took a flower of both and put them side by side and was hard to tell the difference. Of course miniata can turn into a fairly massive specimen.

Yes...I hate the name for this species. Would have thought the taxonomists could have used a better descriptor. I still have the tag that say's rolfei.

Chuck, very interesting plant, how high will it go, does it show any signs of branching or is it straight upward? Do the flowers open any more than they are in the picture, my Maxillaria variabaills [yellow] they open out a little more but it is nowhere as big. I like it's red color.

Here are some photos of Max. coccinea in the wild. By the way, there was a severe drought some years ago, and all the seedlings in the photo died, even the relatively large ones. Only the adult plants survived. Maxillaria coccinea "in situ"

    It is beautiful.
I just looked it up on the IOSPE site and apparently "miniata" means rust-red. I was thinking about it because my Clivia miniata is blooming now and it's no miniature, either.
