    Hello all,

I just purchased this Masdevallia with weird, deformed leaves. I was drawn to it partially because it looked so odd. As you can see, many of the leaves are rather misshapen and accordion like. It seems some of the leaves are completely the wrong shape. On second thought, could this be a virus like Bean Yellow Virus? The theory is that it was a nutritional issue and the leaves are free of streaking. I talked to the seller (who is very reliable) and was told it had a lot of nutritional issues and many of the others were similarly marred. I just want to make sure it’s safe to go into my greenhouse.

I don't see any symptoms of Bean Yellow Mosaic Virus. To look for BYMV you want to look at the newest growths. If you hold them up to the light, you will see a mosaic pattern of opaque and translucent patches. That seems to disappear as the leaf ages. There are some deformation symptoms that seem to be associated with virus that is something like a notch on one side of the leaf and the mid-rip curves to that side. I don't see that either.

It could be a nutritional deficiency though the plant looks robust. It might be a lack of water while those deformed leaves were forming and expanding.

I would keep it so that the leaves aren't touching any other plant until you see some clean looking new leaves come up.
