Lepanthes pollination

    Does anybody know if Lepanthes can be self-pollinated? I have about 10 species that i'd like to pollinate at some point but I don't like making hybrids.

    I know that it has been done with at least one species. Though I think it took a lot of tries to get a capsule.

    I make hundreds of Lepanthes pollinations a year. Only ones that can be selfed are those that are sometimes cleistogamic: orchestris, acarina, for example. Even sib-crossing Lepanthes is quite difficult for most species. Really better to try to source two clones of a given species if you want to make seeds...

    Interesting. pacome, do you mean outcrossing (crossing between different individuals of the same species) or sib-crossing (crossing between siblings = individuals who share at least one parent)? If it is the later, they may have something called genetic self-incompatibility (e.g. tomato-relatives, Brassica etc). A concrete example of genetic SI hasn't been demonstrated in orchids yet.
