It was -14 last night and my heater in the greenhouse quit. Everything is limp. All the flowers have wilted and changed color. I am pretty sure I have lost them all. Thanks to the economy hitting us hard, I won't be able to replace my collection. I am just heartbroken.

I am very sorry to hear that and I certainly feel your pain...maybe some will make it. Maybe just start over with a few plants in your home. Best wishes...:(

What orchids do you like. I will be thinning my collection soon and would be glad to send you some when the weather breaks. I live in zone 6.

You guys are great. If you are interested in sharing I would love to rehome some for you. I like catts, onc, paphs and bulbos. Had a couple of psychopsis and a nodosa that had over 50 growths. I feel so bad because I finally had a few that were big enough to divide and share and now I am the one looking for divisions. Thanks for helping me cheer up a bit everyone.

You will know what is absolutely the toughest when it survives.

I'm so sorry :( I hope people are able to band together and your able to have a nice collection again. I will send good vibes for the plants the plant remain I'm your care and in hopes you have some that made it <3
I can only imagen your reasonable conclusion to quit, but it's just not going to happen with nice people in the orchid community :) I haven't a big collection but I will be on the look out for deals and doubles for you and in the spring when the weather is nice I'll pm you for an address:)

You guys are awesome. Mandy, plant people are the best kind. I was ready to open the door to the greenhouse yesterday and let the winter take what it would, but life will go on. I am looking at a temperature alarm so that this will not happen without some warning in the future. I would love to rehome any that you all are willing to share. Love my online plant family!

Send me a pm offline with your mailing address and we can coordinate a shipment when things warm up a bit. Personally I work with ADT on my home alarm system. They were able to install a max min alarm for less than $100 and it is part of my home security system now, so if there is an issue, the alarm goes off in the house and they call my cell number to warn me. The only bad part is the lower temp is at 45 degrees, but most of what I grow can tolerate that for a short time. If you are growing warmer things, this might be too cool. But it is a great piece of mind knowing it is monitored and I have a good chance of saving things if there is a problem

It is just a learning process for those who switch from windowsill to greenhouse...., quit? I doubt that...., before long, you will save up enough lunch money and build a better collection.

Thank you for the offer and the advice, Eric. Tom, you are correct. I was very upset when I started this thread. Things look even worse out there this morning and the smell is bad, but I will go forward. Especially with all the offers of plant and the advice I am getting.

The rest of the country seems so strange. I've had frost on my windshield early some mornings. To experience what everyone else does with winter seems so rough. There were some 80°f days already this year.

Like Tom said, you can reconstitute a collection again. Especially as you know what you like, what works, and there's room to try new things now too.

sorry for your loss. i'm using a high/low remote warning made for freezers, like you might have in a garage. it came with 2 senders, in the greenhouse, and a receiver in the house. runs on batteries. the high temp. goes to 100* and the low plenty cold. look for one that sends thru walls and around corners. not very expensive. you're right plant lovers are the nicest people.

Daethen, so sorry that happened. I am away from home and just saw this. If I have anything you are interested in I will be happy to send you some plants when the weather warms a bit.

Thank you so much, Kelly. You sent me a piece of something a while back and I was so happy with it. It was starting to send out a ton of roots and 4 new growths. Bob, I am looking at one that calls your phone if the temp gets out of the parameters you set. I DO NOT want this to happen again.

Keep in mind that the show in Neenah is this weekend. If you can do the drive, come up.
Let me know, and I'll bring a couple of catts for you.
Also, the WOS Auction in next month, you could come to that as my guest if you like.
    Sorry about the loss.

Deathen If you could let us know when the weather turns, I would be more than glad to send you some plants to replace what you lost. Went through the same thing only in reverse. Furnace stuck on when we were out of town and cooked about 1/2 of my plants. Keep your head up, it will get better
