How do I name an orchid clone a clonal name?
Does it have to be awarded by a juge?

I was wondering because I want to name one of my orchids but there are no orchid meetings around here.

Any advise greatly apreasiated (I hope my spelling is not to bad).

Yes, if you want your plant to be recognized by the AOS you would need it to win an AOS award (of which there are many types). I'm pretty sure regional judging centers (around the US with one in Toronto and one in Puerto Rico) hold monthly judgings, but some orchid shows are attended by judging teams capable of giving out awards. Information on that can be found on the AOS's website (www.aos.org). Also, it's good to note (if you're stingy like me) that there is a cost to having an award given- something like $40 I think.

    Thank you very much.
When I move to georgia I will take it to the Atlanta orchid society at ABG.

You can put your clonal name on any plant you. It doesn't have to be awarded. If you think that it has already been named by someone else, you should respect that name.

The clonal name is usually no more than 3 words and is put in single quotes after the name of the species or hybrid.

Adding to Marni's comment, it is unethical to rename a cultivar that is already named (although there are jerks who do).

    Thanks.
I only have one plant with a tag that has a clonal name.
But just because the tag dos'nt have a clonal name dos'nt mean the plant dos'nt have a clonal name.

True, or you might not recognize that it's actually a clonal name. Something like khm0967 might seem a mystery and without use to you but when plants are churned out to a rate you use numbers instead of names you use that sort of code. It is worthwhile if there is some sort of code like that after the specific epithet to contact the grower because you might get it awarded and change the clone or the grower might get a higher award and they are still the same plant.

That's why they should be in single quotes, so you know it's a cultivar name, and not just a code.

If they don't, and someone gets lucky enough to get an FCC with one of their plants, as far as I'm concerned, they're free to name it, clone it and make a fortune, with no obligation or ethics issues.
