I have been growing this for 15 years. For the first 13 it didn't bloom for me. Now it is making up for lost time.

Wow, I guess so!!! That is stunning. Congratulations.

Was there some condition that was lacking or do they have to be old plants to bloom?

The plant photo looks like a yucca.

I don't really know what made the difference. They certainly don't have to be this big to bloom as I have a couple of small plants that have spikes now. It had been in the greenhouse that was quite cold in the winter and quite warm days in the summer. Now it is is the cool house, up high so it is in cattleya light and seems very happy. It also has a wonderful fragrance.

The growths are very brittle and parts will break off it they are tapped. I was very proud to get this in to the photography room and back out without breaking the leaves.

Not a strong point with me. My memory says sweet, full, and just a touch heavy. Not cloying, but I wouldn't call it fresh or light. It was definitely pleasant. Does that work?

Daniel, I just found this in an old post by Tom about this species and thought it would add another dimension for you.

"Some like that fragrance. To me, it smells like cheap perfume with a touch of stinky bug."
