Well it's not Humphrey Bogart but he/she is pretty intimidating. Some species of jumping spider on our front door. 1/2"

It's funny since last year at this same time in the same place I saw this guy who was 3/4"-1" It was much bigger

    These things are so interesting.

I saw one of those things catch a housefly once. That was pretty sweet.

"Interesting"???? Well, that's one way of looking at it, I guess. If I find a spider in the house, I take him outside to do his thing there. I'm a softy like that. But if the thing has hair and is big enough to eat me? All bets are off.

i think they're fun to watch too

does anyone know if the small ones and large ones i see are the same species, just different ages or are they different species? i haven't looked closely enough to recognize/see patterns

I doubt they are the same species although it's hard to say. There are many species that are very small at maturity and only a few that are as large as these in my area.

i have seen many different patterns and sizes out here, but not like these 2.

in my yard the most common one i see, is about 1/2" full grown with varying amounts of black and orangey-red colors.

Those that live here are not very toxic to humans at all no matter what the size. It may hurt and swell but that would be about it.

I was moving some concrete blocks today.
    Glad I was wearing gloves!
The second block to be moved, was housing a black widow spider, and 4 egg sacks! FOUR!

They are kind of common here, and that red hourglass on the bottom is a sure sign. Still, FOUR egg sacks. That's a healthy spider!

Well, it WAS a healthy spider.
I squished it, and it's egg sacks.
