This plant has gone through a lot. In 2017 during hurricane Maria it was buried under a meter of debris. Then it was grievously damaged during the clean up when removing the trees that had fallen around it. Then it lost canes to sunburn because for years there was no canopy to protect it from the sun. An now it is overrun with vines which I have neglected to remove. I was surprised to see not one but two inflorescences growing from its base. This plant is not from the modern yellow strain that is available commercially, it descends from a plant that was imported, a great cost, to Puerto Rico back in 1960.
