The first orchid I've seen with a superior ovary (if I'm interpreting the image correctly). That's very interesting and even nicer is that brilliant orange.

Nick, very nice photo of an interesting plant. On the bottom photo, what is the dark bloom in the backround?

The dark bloom is a Cymbidium Little Black Sambo 'Black Magic'

DPfarr, those are modified bracts, not petals. These bracts look to be characteristic of the species, but most of the pictures online are pale yellow, occasionally bright yellow. Orange seems to be something special.

That was my experience searching the web, nothing orange like this came up. Today, the third day since it's been full open, some the bracts are turning yellow. About 50% of some of the bracts have turned a pale yellow, the majority are still fully orange. I have sent the pictures to Andy who is out of town and expected back tomorrow. I'll post his comment.

I believe mine is the similar plant. I've been waiting for the flower nearly five years
