Encyclia plicata "in situ" in Cuba

    A friend of mine is currently on a birdwatching tour in the island of Cuba. I asked him to take photos of any orchid he came across. Here is the first photo he sent me. I think it is Encyclia plicata. 20217014_10155726315775757_1066677203_n.jpg

    The species seems to be quite variable in lip color.

    Awesome plant. Looks like it may be Encyclia sabanensis. Very similar to plicata and phoenicea. Thank you for sharing

    Very similar to iris, but I could be wrong.

    Many varieties of them, and yes, some of them are difficult to distinguish from certain species of orchids. I've been growing irises in my house, as of late, and was surprised to find that the more graceful and variegated the variety of iris in the bed, the more likely it is to be affected by diseases and pests! And by the way, about traveling. I too attended a similar tour at Costa Rica Focus. It`s an incredible experience, especially for animal lovers. I advise everyone to visit such place at least once.
