Looks like slug or snail damage. Submerge the entire pot in water and see if a slug comes to the surface. They are adept to hiding in the medium.

When this happens I remove the pot from its location, put it in a place where snails and slugs cannot reach and carefully ring the plant with enough snail bait to send any mollusk to the great and happy lettuce leaf in the sky. But be careful slug bait pellets are poison so keep them out of reach of children and pets.

If that pot was close to others, whatever it is may have moved on to greener pastures. Look for slime trails in nearby pots. You could just dump the medium out, wash the plant off well and repot it.
