Dendrobium nobile

This Dendrobium nobile was mounted on an avocado tree in 1990, it has been growing well ever since with little need for watering or fertilization. The avocado tree was planted next to my house by my father shortly after I was born.

 

People love them. I sell most of them to get money for the garden upkeep. They sell mighty well since this particular tree fruit ripens very late in the season when fresh avocados are getting scarce.

 

Dendrobium nobile is among the most tolerant of Dendrobium species, I think it can handle cold well, but not frost. I was going to check on the Baker's book of Dendrobium but my grievous tendency to pile books on top of each other until there is a huge pile means that I am not sure where it is.

 

Did some digging in the library and found that the plant can experience temperatures in the 48-50 for months with no ill effects. The Baker's book on Dendrobium (I found it, I was hopelessly confused by the fact that it was in its proper place) says they can even tolerate temperatures below freezing, but only for short spells.
