Had this one for 4 1/2 years and this is its biggest flowering yet. I love it! Now to find a red form.

Very beautiful. I have ome for a year now. Did not bloom yet. And I hope it will flower once as yours!

Maybe if you get a red form, then we can trade cuttings later. :)

Mikhail, very nice blooming. I know people who have or have had the red form too. That includes me, but I lost mine. They seem to do well for a while and then go down hill. Those who have it, usually got it from a friend and several have said they were able to get a piece back. It pays to share.

Great job growing this to specimen size, Mikhail. I hope to pick one up next month from Andy's. It also looks like you have multiple plants on the mount.
    Spectacular!

Thank you! Yes its acting like a vine and popping up from the moss everywhere. Gave it more light this year and it gave me more flowers and lots of growth in return!

    image.jpeg Hi Mikhail,

This was one I got from Andy a couple years ago. Bloomed for the first time with 3 blooms last last year and is starting to bud now. Hopefully I can keep it going to look like yours! One question I have for everyone is its validity as a species. I've had a couple people insist it is a hybrid (natural or otherwise) between cuthbertsonii and subacaule. Anyone have any thoughts on that?

    Chuck

Your plant is looking great! Looking forward to your pics!

I would say species. But some say it's a variety of cuthbertsonii. The leaves of agathodaemonis are smaller and thinner than those of cuthbertsonii, and the flowers lack the dark coloring on the mid lobe of the lip. Also the seed pod is smooth, where is cuthbertsonii is spikey or hairy.

Hi...yes, I agree it's not a cuthbertsonii (even though some used to say it was synonymous). What I was referring to was the natural hybrid claim of cuthbertsonii X subacaule. I'm not an advocate either way, but morphologically, it is not unreasonable to consider the possibility.

The worldwide consensus seems to be species. The flower is so small on subacaule that I think it would drag down the flower size of agathodaemonis somewhat, plus, subacaule is multifloral, and that usually shows up in multifloral crosses with cuthbert. Also, the flower morphology of subacaule is so different from cuthbert,(like a mini vexillarius) I think that would show up as well. I have a cuthbert bud just opening and a subacaule just starting to push buds, and if i'm lucky when I get an agatho from Andy in three weeks, it will be in flower as well. I'll have to compare all of them. Great question though.

One interesting thing of note, the capsule on Den. agathodaemonis is smooth while that of Den. cuthbertsonii is not.

Thanks Ryan...That's a good explanation and I'll have to keep that in my back pocket next time I get questioned on it. Question...do you know if the plants in circulation are from Richard Warren's original flasks, or have there been subsequent generations? Multiple generations with consistency is usually a good indicator as well
