    Hello everyone!

I have a Cymbidium that looks healthy and 'springy' except for one thing. The tips of about 1/2 of its leaves have turned brown. In researching online, read advise to trim the brown off, which I did - but the rest of the information was confusing. Some sites said it was because it was too wet, others said it was too dry. I have tried holding off on watering/misting until the bark was bone dry and then tried the reverse - where I've been misting (not watering) daily. And the brown tips keep steadily browning.

I've got it in bark separated from other pots/plants by 1-2 inches. Also have the pot sitting in a moisture tray (with pebbles and water). It gets no direct sunlight, but pretty bright light for a couple of hours every morning.

Just read somewhere that the roots like to 'stretch' and I need to put it in a deeper pot. Would that help?

Here's a picture of the tips:

As coarse as that potting medium appears, I suspect you're simply not watering it enough.

If you can tell us more about your current watering and feeding regimen, maybe we can make a better guess.

Thank you so much for the response!

I never soak any of my orchids - as I tend to them daily and throughout the day. (I work from home.) If I could 'play' with orchids all day, I'd be in heaven!

I have two spray bottles. One that has heavier droplets and one that's a fine mist. I only use filtered water. I spray the Cymbidium with the heavy droplet bottle every morning until the bark is 'wet'. (I dig my finger down in the bark to make sure the 'wet' gets all the way down.) Sort of like imitating a fine rain. I don't touch it at all for the rest of the day.

It gets no direct sunlight but gets pretty strong light for about two hours every morning. (Southeast facing window.)

I use the other misting bottle on some of my other orchids throughout the day (My Phal's love it!), but never mist the Cymbidium.

Do I just need to 'make it rain' more often? I read that Cymbidiums tend to root-rot, so I was being extra cautious to let the bark dry out every day.

Cyms actually like to stay damp. If you are drying them out, that would lead to brown leaf tips. Mine get an overhead bath every other day, are quite wet most of the time - but are outside, so they also get excellent air circulation. Also, I use small (seedling size) bark with some perlite. Again, a very moisture-retentive medium. No root rot, lots of big, thick roots.

That's one that should be held under the faucet until water runs out the pot.

Thank you! Will make sure bark doesn't dry out.

    I agree with Roberta.

I looked up the Charlotte water report, and it's pretty good but is quite low on calcium and magnesium, so I highly suggest you use a fertilizer that contains them. The so-called "MSU fertilizer" and K-Lite Orchid/Epiphyte fert
