Today I attempted cross breeding two of my dendrobiums. Very excited to see if it works! Both orchids are breedstock/stud orchids that I purchased. The dendrobiums I am attempting to cross are Sunset 'Bondi Beach' and Monet's Garden (Aussie Parade x Starsheen 'Botanic Fireworks).

Last photo is of the Sunset 'Bondi Beach'.

Are you going to flask them up if they form a pod? That would be fun but you have to have patient to see what you helped create.

This first time I'm going to send them to a laboratory if I get a pod. I am not confident of flasking them myself.

To me,it's not that hard and very fun to do flasking, but I have a good background for this.Otherwise, you need someone to show you I expect. There are others on this forum who do lots of flashing,I believe.

I found an article online which stated there were a lot of steps involved and I haven't had much luck tracking the agar for flasking. If there is an easy way of doing it. Happy to give it a try!

The agar is on eBay for sale. There may be videos on utube showing how to flask, but I'm not sure about that.Anyway, it would be best if someone could show you at first.

Yeah, definitely easier if someone can show me the first time.

I would just hate to actually get seeds then mess the flasking up.

Hi, when I am placing the pollen in the stigma. Should it be placed right at the back of the flower?

You need to know the anatomy of your flower. Maybe you can find a picture on the web or in a botany book? Usually, I put the pollen right on the underside of the stigma where there is a sticky area and it's not real deep in the flower.if it works, the flower will close up in a few days and the stigma and ovary area will start to grow gradually.others on this site may tell you a better way, perhaps.

Thank you for your help. I'm only trying this with dendrobiums at the moment (although collected some Laelia pollen today for future projects!).

The diagrams I've found indicate the pollen should be placed at the back of the flower.

But I tried again today and didn't place it as deep in the flower, which just seems more correct.
