A question for those of you that have kids in college...or are there yourself. My son, Ben, starts college in September. Should he get himself a small notebook laptop for classes? He has a desktop PC but we were thinking he may need one of those small laptops for classes.

Agreed. Laptops make a world of difference. While they can cause distraction during class, they are invaluable for note taking, reasearching, collaborating, etc.

I agree…actually I think a laptop is almost a necessity. I use it in every class for taking my notes and even have a few classes where Excel is used to demonstrate formulas in class (and used in homework assignments/tests) so it is helpful to pull it up and work right along with the professor hands on.

Ben would probably enjoy a lap dance a lot more.

Dale, Dale, Dale....you almost owed me a new computer. I was eating raisin bran when I saw your reply and almost spit milk and cereal over the key board. LOL! You're probably right about the lapdance, although moms don't like to think about such things when it comes to their little boys.

Thanks everyone! We'll be sure to get him one...actually he will buy it himself. Steve and I were unaware how much 'little money bags' had saved over the past few years. He was planning ahead.

Wendy, remember a laptop, not a note book. Note books are OK if all you want to do is cruise the internet or send email. Get the lightest one you can afford, Ben will appreciate it.

Thanks Clark. I find the whole laptop/netbook thing confusing. What is the difference...besides the fact a netbook can't do CD's? I get conflicting advice...some people tell me a netbook is sufficient; others say a laptop is needed.

The perfect solution is get rid of the desktop and go with just a laptop so that way it meets all of his needs and is easier to take to the library, student lounge, or even Starbucks to study :poke:

Here at home/business we have a desktop and a laptop. Sometime we need to be working at the same time on different files that are on the desktop.

My daughter's at UC Santa Barbara - she uses a laptop at school in every class. HP makes some nice laptops that'll do the job for about $700.

    A big mac.... ;)

Don't think I could talk him into getting rid of the desk top...it's a gaming machine and he is always 'perfecting' it.

Thanks guys....we will be checking out a new laptop soon. :)

Well Dave, I will second the mac recommendation. I made the switch as an undergrad and never looked back.

Absolutely a laptop, Wendy. I see notebooks as mostly a toy. Make double sure
it has Microsoft Word installed. He's going to get hit right away with English Comp.
101-102 which requires writing and re-writing in 101. 102 is all about that very important research paper...term paper...whatever the university calls that particular
paper. Most universities keep that term paper as a permanent record in the student's
    file.

I had a class 2 years ago on Geostatistics where I was the only undergrad, everyone else was either Masters or PhD. There were 3 Macs in the class versus 5 regular grade laptops. We were always waiting for the Macs to catch up with the rest of the class. Oh yea, one of the Mac users was a PhD candidate.
