I have been using more coconut fiber recently and looking for a source of good quality at a good price. I just got 3 pounds of really nice quality fiber from Orchids for the People for $5 a pound plus USPS charges. I've only tried a couple of other sources before this, but this is the very best I've seen and a much better price. Also, it is sold by weight and not volume and shipped the same day I ordered it. They are in Eureka, California. 1975 Blake Rd, McKinleyville, CA 95519 - (707) 840-0223 - [email protected]. They also sell it on eBay here is the link.

I visited their greenhouse maybe 6-8 weeks ago. They are switching their potting medium from fine bark mix to sphagnum in a nest of coco fiber (at least for the 3-4 inch sizes). Makes sense that they have a large supply of it. I wish I had thought to ask them if they sold the coco fiber then.

I use the coconut fiber liners for hanging baskets and pull/shread pieces off as I need it.

Ive mounted a few Masdevallia species in my cool-growing tank using coco fiber instead of sphagnum as an experiment. So far the results are better than with the moss, at least for my growing conditions. Might be using this regularly going forward.

I switched from moss to coconut fiber for mounted plants some months ago and will use continue to use it. The moss is fine at first, but goes bad too quickly.

Resurrecting an old thread to thank you folks. I'm headed up there this weekend, and will now take two gallon-size baggies. The one local source for sphagnum I've found only has a huge brick for $33, which would last my handful of babies at least 20 years. :-\

I live in Arcata; McKinleyville is 6 miles north of me. Oh tragic.

Even better, I discovered Seal Rock Orchids is a mile from where I work; trying to contact them.
