How cool do folks grow this? The Baker culture sheet indicates a low of 66F in January in its habitat which would be too warm for me. However it also says it can experience extreme lows of 39F which would indicate that it doesn't need night temps in the 60's.

Fred grows these with 50-55 degree night temps. I would think they could take it even lower without much harm!

I grow it at 56F nights and the plants are doing very well. I have to periodically remind myself that Baker's numbers aren't THE minimum, the are the AVERAGE minimum and only for that particular climate station that was chosen or the extrapolation of elevation that he (sometimes arbitrarily) chose. It is still my first source of information when researching a species. The maximum elevation listed for this species is 1500 m which is not 66F at night, but usually more in the low to mid 50's range as Peter mentions. If you don't have it yet, I think you should give it a try.

my trianaei grow well down into the forties at night, for limited period; they are more temperature tolerant, than, say, c. violacea.

I agree with all above, especially Marnie's point. Plants simply cannot be adapted to survive only to the average minimum because there were will be so many days that are well below the average. Mine do fine with occasional evening temps down to the upper 30s, though I'm sure they would do better with lows of mid50s.

The plants may do OK, but what about the flowers? My experience has been either flower damage or flower drop below 55F at night.
