    Hi Everyone,

I haven't been on the forum for a while, I guess I haven't had any issues or rather any that I did have I have sorted out myself BUT I am wondering if you could tell me reasons why some of my cattleyas have a sheath that has basically dried up and hasn't opened with a flower? Maybe this is normal but others open up to a flower, albeit not enough for my liking but anyway I am hoping for a better season next season as I have repotted and sorted out my root rot problem!

    Thanks guys!

    Fernbrook :)

On the assumption that you're not referring to immature plants, which often produce a "blind sheath" or two, I can think of two possibilities: One is overfeeding with excessive amounts of nitrogen, If the plants are a bright emerald green color, that's a good indicator. If that's not the case, I would chalk it up to the plants' not having developed sufficient energy stores to "spend" on blooming, suggesting some deficiency in the culture.

If, as you indicated, you have been fighting to get the root zone environment right, that alone could be the culprit.
