Are the 'alba' colour forms rare among the Cattleya species ?

Do all large-flowered Cattleya species produce 'alba' forms ?
    Has anyone ever heard of a 'C. dowiana-alba' ?

I think this question deserves a thread of its own.

I agree with Ricardo. Let me know if you want the title changed.

I think I have 4 large cattleya species alba form. My first cattleya was bought in 1986 at a friends urging as a cool grower. It was C percivaliana alba. I have since learned that this is not an easy thing to find. Most of the "alba" percivalianas really do need quotes around the word since a lot of them have pink in there too. I've been trying to do an outcross with another alba clone for about 6 years and they are few and far between. So far neither selfing nor outcross has produced viable seed, though my plant has been a successful parent with 'Summit'.

I also have a C warneri alba that does produce a bit of viable seed on a selfing, but very little. I've sown enough seed so I would have had 10,000 plants of other cattleyas and come up with about 15 protocorms. The other 2 species are chocoensis/quadricolor and labiata, but I haven't tried any breeding with either of them.

I've never heard of C dowiana alba, but I don't grow that species so haven't been paying attention.

I think the aurea is about as albinistic as you're going to get from dowiana. If it were alba you wouldn't want it anyways would you?

Marni did the pollen I sent you work? I can send more if you need it. It's about to bloom again.

Zach, I had two capsules go to maturity but couldn't see any embryos under the 200x scope. I sowed quite a bit of it also and haven't gotten anything germination. Some times with something like this a few protocorms will pop up long after one should have given up. I'm still hoping. Selfing of my plant had the same result.
