This plant was given to me by John Klinger back in the spring. I like it. Thanks, John.
This species is terrestrial and deciduous.

This flower just opened so it may flatten more. If it does flatten a bit it will be 2 inches across. I'll post here again when more are open.

Given the ease of their care and their floriferousness it is something of a mystery why these plants are not more popular.

Kelly- I have noticed that your photography skills have really bulked up in the past month or so. Well done! Can you shed some light on your techiques? I BARELY passed photography in college... and that was about 14 yrs ago. Needless to say, I struggle with it.

Thanks, Chad. I have to admit that most of my "skill" is due to better equipment and not an increase in knowledge. Up until October I was using a hand-held point and shoot camera. I now have a Canon T5i DSLR and a good macro lens and a tripod. Before the digital era I was reasonably skilled with 35mm SLR photography so now I am applying that knowledge to the digital methods. I am still experimenting with my camera capabilities and I bounce around between fully automatic, full manual, and aperture priority. So far my favorite orchid photography is indoors with strong natural light through a window and using manual mode and manual focus. I've also been playing with focus stacking techniques. Lots o' fun.

I must have missed this one. I am really starting to appreciate the deciduous calanthes. Has the flower flattened out? Ready for an update?

Marni, it did flatten nicely. Also, the red bled further out into the white to the point that it doesn't look as crisp. There are 3 blooms open now and I'll wait for a few more to open before I photograph it again.

Here is an update. As the bloom ages the red bleeds further into the lip. The pbulb has lost all of the leaves now.
