Bulbophyllum virescens. Distribution: Malaya Peninsular in understorey forest. B. binnendijkii (which has a longer narrower lip) and more widely distributed, is now considered to be conspecific with B.virescens.

I received this orchid when I exchanged some plants with a friend. It looked to be on its last legs when I received it with only one large leaf which was already turning brown, and I think that it's thrown its flowers up as a last gasp whilst under stress.

I shall have to wait and hope it recovers.

Great colors on that one. I hope it survives.

    How bad is the "fragrance"?

After a half hour of googling, it seems that this bugger can grow to be a 'monster' that rambles all over. 8 to 10 inches between each pseudobulb! Still want it...

After many years growing Bulbophyllums I have become imune to the various levels of odours, yes some are more noteworthy. B.virescens has a distinct fishy odour. When a farmer enters his cow shed does he notice the odour from his cattle waste?.

Add that to the signs that someone has orchid fever, they say things like "When a farmer enters his cow shed does he notice the odor from his cattle waste?"
