Bulbophyllum saltatorium var calamarium is rarely seen in collections. This species is found across West Tropical Africa, in Primary forest at 0-900m alt. Epiphyte in the crown of trees on bark or in minor humus deposits. (Occasionally lithophytic).

This species differs from the other three varieties of B.saltatorium because of the very fine and velvety or woolly hairs that arise along the margins of the adaxial side of the lip, and constitute a thick rim up to the extreme tip of the lip. Towards the top part of the lip the hairs are courser and much longer. The flowers are up to 1/2 an inch long. (J.J.Vermeulen) 1987.
