Arachnis

Looks similar Arachnis flos-aeris, but the color is a bit different at the lips as far as I can see.

How tall is the plant?
Do you have a picture of the whole plant?

I have an Arachnis flos-aeris it‘s growing well but don‘t like to flower.

Does it get full sun?

 

I‘ m member of the orchid socity of Germany and go to the local meetings in Berlin.
But not so many members have an Arachnis.....

Mine ist now 7‘ so it should be able to flower, I have Renantheras and Vandas too and they do well at my south east conservatory.
And flowering of course.

I used to live and study in Miami and had a very good time over there 3 decades ago, and I asume the weather there is much more appropiate. ;-)

I‘m a bit envy German since people in such warm and sunny regions don‘t need to do much to keep their tropical orchids happy.
And I prefer this type of weather too.

 

Unfortunately I did‘t visit it, at that time I was‘t so much into plants.
Too young and too busy with my PhD study, and to discover Florida as well.
And I spent only a year over there and finished my studies in Germany.
Even I had the opportunity to stay, but I wanted to get the german degree.
So my live got in a different direction, but I had a great time in the US.

Thanks for your advice, I will see if I can improve my culture.
I have Arachnis longicaulis as well, 3 small plants, but it will take some time to get them into the right size to flower.

I got my PhD in medicinal chemistry, doing research for new drugs, and I have a MS in chemistry, and I‘m a MD.

I spent a lot of time at the universities for my degrees, now I have a small collection.

 

Well, orchids are important for an orchid forum.

I suppose therefore we are here, and I’m happy to see what other people growing and flowering.
I get inspiration about the culture and what I might like to buy.
Of course it is not endless, it should still be a hobby and not work.

But with orchids it never gets boring since there are so many species around and even more hybrids.
I‘m mostly in species, but I‘m not dogmatic when I see an interesting hybrid.

 

Arachnis Maggie Oei "Yellow Ribbon" This hybrid was produced in Asia by the millions for the cut flower market, but eventually it was superseded by newer hybrids. It was produced in the 1940's and exported all over the world. The plants are vigorous and can grow well in tropical areas even if neglected. But if you water and fertilize them it is like throwing gasoline into a fire, they grow rampantly and form massive clumps. I have seen trees with hundreds of stems rambling over them.

 

There is also Arachnis Maggie Oei "red ribbon" which is even more colorful. Arachnis flos aeris var. insignis is perhaps the most showy of the lot but can be a challenge to grow since it loves high humidity. Also it will not bloom unless it is quite large. Arachnis

 

And here I thought this is a species in Indonesia. It is in season right now along with Vanda tricolor var. suavis. Thanks for the info!

 

There are about twenty species of Arachnis some are quite handsome. Unfortunately their large size means they are not suited for people with limited space, and the people preference for colorful hybrids means there is very limited market for species. Most people familiar with Arachnis have never even seen the most common species in cultivation, Arachnis flos-aeris.
