Here is Cajun, my new (to me) rooster. Before anyone even asks, NO I didnt name him Cajun because thats how I'll prepare him  He's a pet. I always wanted one and now in the new house, I have the oppurtunity. Next are a few hens.

I adopted Cajun one day before his time was up at the shelter. He's very friendly. He can be held and actually likes his chest to be scratched. I love just watching him. His sounds and movements crack me up. I wonder how long it will take his tail feathers to grow out. Most of his existing ones are broken from possibly a small cage. The pictures don't do justice to how big he is. I'll post more pics later. The camera battery died right after I took this pic.

BTW...... Brant, that was great info you posted on Candaces thread. Thank You

If I lived on more than a few square feet, I'd get chickens. I grew up with Rhodesian Reds(?) and something that laid green eggs. Nothing like seeing a chicken run around with its head chopped off when you're 9. Really. It's weird.

Karen - So far I'm up before he is. I get up at 4 and leave the house at 4:30 and I haven't heard him yet.
The dogs haven't gone after him...... but they sure do want to

Jon - LOL, when I was young in PR, the chicken dinners were always FRESH if you know what I mean. I saw my share of floppin headless chickens. I know my guy is a Rhode Island Red (mix?). Not sure if there is a Rhodesian Red, but I'm new to this so there may be.

Alexis - Waddup girl!, Still ridin up and down Krome Ave? :) I'm in Golden Gate Estates just east of the city of Naples. A guy can stretch his arms out here. It's rural. A little like Redland with more houses. Most lots are 1.5 to 5 acres

Way to go, man! A guy needs to be able to stretch his arms. Does a girl good, too! I'm sure the pooches are lovin' it. Yup, still riding; although I hear my girl out there wimpering from neglect. The orchids have been hogging all my free time this winter.

Handsome looking rooster. How do you tell how old they are since they don't have teeth?

Girls are coming soon. Till then, he's just gonna have to get worked up listening to my neighbors hens. poor fella

Not sure about age. I was told as they get older their legs get dry and scaley. Cajuns are pretty shiney so they guess-timate around 2yrs. I don't know how accurate that is though

He sure looks like a Rhode Island Red to me. My girls are getting big, too. No roosters for us though. My girls are not thrilled with being picked up. One puts up with petting. The other got bit by my dog and we didn't know if she was going to make it:< But, she's pulled through and will live. Keep the dogs away or work at training asap. We're going to have to watch our pooch very carefully once we let them go free range. Of course, they're going to be his size soon and will probably scare him off(dashund).

We bought some organic feed and there was a notice up that they'd rescued like 20 hens around 2 years old from a free-range place...they'd been de-beaked. What the ick?? That can't be pleasant.

I think that happens to wimmen, too. Just as well, since they'll lie about their age if you give 'em half a chance.
