I thought I would find it hardest when having a beer but to my great surprise I missed it more when I was just sitting around drinking coffee, and when I was driving.

I quit about 27 years ago. At the time I heard many stories. I remember a fellow telling me about getting in to the car and ending up sobbing, hunched over steering wheel because he didn't know how to start a car without a cigarette. You light one up and then turn the key. Without the ritual, he couldn't get the rest of the sequence.

I can tell you that your "Habit" never stops trying to lure you back. These days it may be once every year or two. I can see a pack of cigarettes laying on a table and something in the back of my head says: Go ahead, take one, no one here will know you aren't supposed to smoke. It is so out of left field that now I laugh, but it wasn't so funny when I first quit.

    So keep it up.

The urge pops up at weird times for me. Never when I'm drinking booze or coffee or after big meals. It's always when I'm at the gym or something weird. The urges are fewer and further between, but they still pop up here and there. It goes away more quickly these days though. Lung cancer has been a pretty big theme in the lives of people close to me over the past few years, so that's the trump card that makes all the difference.
