One of my favourites! Now I just need to find thomsonianus, which I think looks really cool.

Nice one, Calvin. I was recently given a division so I'll be hoping mine does as well as yours.

I really like this genus! I killed mine when I tried it years ago. I need to find another.

Thanks for reminding me why I am working very hard trying to succeed with this species. I am finally growing some, but no chance of any blooms yet. Also, I have gotten seedlings of Anc. thomsonianus to survive to the point where they are forming some tiny pseudobulbs and that is a major victory to me.

Wow! That is lovely! And as evidenced by the other posts a tricky species. Well done.

A very good flowering plant. I had one once, it grew well and flowered abundantly, but then there was a turn for the worse and it eventually died from some uncontrollable fungus. I think it did not really like growing in the mixture of coconut coir, gravel and charcoal ... it made a brave attempt for about a year, but then it was subjected to a climate change factor ... I think it did not like the lower temperatures of January / February here in Costa Rica ... and so, its defenses were down, probably too wet from careless overwatering, and the fungus attacked. So now, I am prepared to find another plant and give it another shot in pure charcoal/river gravel mixture with a defined dry season resting period.

I'm puzzled by the low abundance of these in the market, as they seem to produce new pbulbs freely, with each old one giving rise to 2 or 3. Maybe I am just lucky though.

I'm not sure if this is the secret or not, but I keep mine bone dry throughout the dormant period, with possible misting once every month or so. I've gone through years with absolutely no water at all, until the new growths start. I've grown it in low light, and high light...in terrariums, and on the windowsill. This year it was just on a windowsill and did better than it has ever done before, with ambient humidity, and light.

It's in a nasty mix of old sphagnum charcoal, styrofoam pieces, and cocohusk. The roots still dive right in. During the growing season it is allowed to get almost crackly dry between waterings.

Thanks for the info Calvin! I remember Mike growing both of these species spectacularly on benign neglect. I wonder where he's been? I haven't seen him around in a while.

Still here! Just been crazy busy with wedding prep and other stuff. Calvin your plant looks awesome. And it looks like it's potted similarly to how I grow mine. I think 'bad' culture must be a key to success with the genus. My indoor conditions are certainly not ideal for orchids in general but that genus seems to like it.

Yes, I repotted mine the way you do after I saw your photos a few years back! Shallow sandwich tupperware ftw!
