About twenty five years ago I brought a plant of Cattleya amethystoglossa 'El Camino'. It grew tall and beautiful and bloomed well. Then I repoted it and it started going downhill and eventually died. I recently found some seedlings produced by a selfing of this plant. I am sure they will grow well but I wonder if repoting is deadly for these plants or if it was just my experience. This orchid is extremely rare locally, I have only seen one plant which makes me wonder if there is something about its culture that might be tricky aside from the repoting issue. Any advice is apreciated.

Apart from that specific clone I've never had any issues repotting them. I'm not even sure I felt the need to observe the "bifoliate repot law".

There is an article on cattleyas in Orchid Digest that I have floating around somewhere that gives charts of when is the best time to repot specific cattleyas. I may even have images of the charts somewhere. I can't stop right now as I have company for a week, but if someone hasn't answered your question by next week, send me a pm to remind me and I'll dig it up.

What's the "bifoliate repot law"? I grow Catts. here and there and have never heard of it. I just repot when I find the time :)

I have 'many' plants of Stanhopeinae, a few plants of Cattleya, and
also some others - but in every case of re-potting I observe
    one iron-clad rule :
    --------------------
    >> re-pot exclusively when the plant is growing or,
in other words, re-pot when the plant is making a strong leaf shoot.

My own rule is to repot plants when I know they will be producing new roots shortly.

Its usually the better or ideas to repot bifoliates when there is root tips emerging. Preserving them is of the utmost importance in all this matter.
